The first school day of 2009 was a great day to see familiar faces and get back into the routine of school. All nine classrooms were busy with activity, and we welcomed two new students - Bryston Baxter in fourth grade and Savannah Campbell in seventh grade.
Next Friday is our Pint Sized Heroes blood drive with American Red Cross. We strongly encourage you to give blood during this event. We’ve already received several confirmations of blood donors, but there is plenty of room for more volunteers. This is a good, practical way to put faith into action and affirm the value of life. More information on this event will be coming home soon.
Our intramural coed basketball starts today. Because I did not get the reminder out on the snow day, I’m sure many basketball players were not aware of this. Basketball will be every Monday and Friday.
The Drama Club holiday presentation has been rescheduled for this Friday at 2:45. Unfortunately, the snow day delayed this event, but the students are well prepared and will put on an enjoyable show.

In a recent edition of the Catholic Weekly, several letters from Saint Basil students were published saying what they were thankful for. Samantha Simon, Katie Kimbler, Greg Rogers, Meaghan Dalecki, Paige Lancaster, and Emily Simon each wrote poetry or paragraphs where they shared their thoughts on God, family, and the celebration of Thanksgiving.
Tomorrow will be a very busy day. The afternoon will feature the class Christmas parties. Consumers Credit Union will be here to take deposits for student accounts.
If you’re looking for an easy way to help our school, please check out GreatSchools.net. Do a search for Saint Basil Catholic School in Michigan, and we will pop up. There is a place for parent reviews. Your honest opinions would be greatly appreciated as we reach out to the community. We’ll be adding more information to their database in the coming weeks.

Tomorrow is a Mass Day. We had Mass on Monday as it was a Holy Day. Some students thought that meant there would be no Mass on Friday. That is incorrect. Every student needs to be in a Mass Day uniform.
Ski passes are expected by Friday or Saturday. If you want yours for this weekend, please contact Kris Rieck at 637-5883. Otherwise, they will be sent to school next week.
The classes are eagerly anticipating next Thursday’s Christmas parties, the Drama Club Christmas play on Friday afternoon, and the Christmas Sing-along on Friday afternoon.
Those who qualified for the Midwest Academic Talent Search should make sure they are registered, as deadlines are approaching. If your student qualified, you received a packet of information in October. For more information, visit www.ctd.northwestern.edu.

Yesterday all the students went to Mass to celebrate the Holy Day. In relating the story of the Immaculate Conception, Father Bob made a point to emphasize to the students that Mary was not rich or famous but was an ordinary person called upon to do extraordinary things.
Remember, you can bring in your Village Market receipts, and the school will get a donation. You can also bring in your Coke Rewards bottle caps and box codes. We can type them in for you to raise funds for the school.
Lainee Boss from Kiwanis came in today to introduce students in K through 3 to the Terrific Kids program. Each class will be doing small projects in the months of January to April to earn their Terrific Kids awards. Lainee has been the Kiwanis rep at our school for many years, and the students are always excited to see her each month.

There is a very important and exciting project going on. We are attempting to build as completely as possible a database of Saint Basil alumni. The first stage in this process is a group typing session in the Upper Room on Wednesday after school. Readers and typists are needed to enter data into Excel spreadsheets. Building an alumni database is a key part in our development strategy. Alumni appreciate what their Saint Basil experience did for them, and we have successful alumni all around the country with stories to share.
If you have any questions about the project, please contact Heather Valenziano at hvalenziano@verizon.net.
Don’t forget that Monday is a Mass Day.

Photo retakes will be Tuesday, December 9. If you want a retake, the cost is $6. If you have the proofs, please bring them in to show the photographer what was wrong. If your child was absent on photo day, there is no charge.
A group of parents are going to be getting together as a prayer group to support the school. The group will be meeting weekly in the mornings. More details will be coming soon, as the prayer group hopes to begin in January.
Saint Basil is now part of the My Coke Rewards program. The codes from participating Coca-Cola company products (Dasani, Minute Maid, Coke, Sprite, etc.) can be entered at www.MyCokeRewards.com. Points can then be used by our school to purchase classroom and playground supplies. Just visit the website, register, and designate Saint Basil as your school of choice.

~ School pictures have arrived for those of you who ordered them.

The Booster meeting scheduled for Monday evening was cancelled due to the Lake Effect Snow Advisory. We will keep you informed on an alternate date so the Booster Club projects can proceed.
The 1st and 2nd grade are sponsoring a “Stuff the Turkey” project. Non-perishible food items may be donated and placed in the turkey outside the office. All donations go to We Care.
Thank you to all who have responded to the school’s Wish List. Many items have been donated, and teachers and students greatly appreciate the impact these items have on their class activities.
We have a record number of students signed up for floor hockey - 34! Basketball started today, with Mrs. Peterson, Miss Lynch, and Mr. Ford leading the first day of the girls’ program.
Please remember to check channels 3 and 8 and WCSY radio for any school closing information due to snow. Also, make sure your students are well prepared for outside recess in the snow. Those who love to make snow angels can get awfully chilly if they aren’t dressed in layers!
